Our main areas of work in Malawi are based in the districts of Salima & Kasungu (Central Malawi) and the capital - Lilongwe.
Our nine projects (now ten as we are managing the Madalitso/Project Malawi programme in Lilongwe – more news to follow) fit into four key areas of development, we have identified as main contributors
in lifting communities out of extreme poverty: Christian Teaching, Education, Health and Agriculture.
Our Student Sponsorship programme provides Secondary School education for a small number of orphans and vulnerable children, most of whom are from our linked primary schools.
Sadly we are unable to assist those who are seeking sponsorship for University and College fees and are not able to recommend another organisation that would be able to help.
Bible Explorer is a worldwide teaching model that helps children to understand the Bible in a way that is both fun and interactive. Starfish run this programme in the UK and Malawi with dedicated teachers delivering lessons in over 40 schools.
Unable to afford sanitary protection, many girls in Malawi are unable to attend school during their periods. Gateway works with local communities to provide reusable sanitary hygiene kits and encourage girls to complete their education.
Glad Tidings Orphan Care (GTOC) is a community based organisation which aims to empower vulnerable children. The centre provides health, nursery education and safeguarding services for over 240 children alongside a number of other community development projects.
The Children's Clubs work to provide activities for children aged 5 to 16 in the Salima community. Children take part in a range of activities including advice on practical living, understanding the Bible, sports and art.
Our main library is used by local Pastors to assist them with theological study. We have an excellent selection of Christian books donated by the UK and provide free internet access. Satellite nurseries have expanded the work across the Salima District.
Hope Missions is a community-led, child-focused initiative working near the capital city of Lilongwe. Starfish Malawi has been a partner of Hope Missions since 2006 and has provided support for nursery education, school infrastructure and church buildings.
A large amount of donated materials are sent to Malawi in a container twice a year. Every arrival is met with great expectation, and always very gratefully received by many of our projects and linked schools.
Our Literacy Leaders Project equips primary school teachers with specialist subject knowledge and teaching methods that greatly enhance children's literacy and their access to the syllabus in all subjects. These Literacy Leaders are supported to develop mentoring skills in order to assist their teaching colleagues and spread the benefits across their whole school.
Madalitso provides a centre for 48 girls to live in safety and to pursue their education in peace. The support includes accommodation costs for some of the girls residing at Elizabeth Hope house, a weekly feeding programme, school tuition fees for 37 pupils and the provision of school uniforms.
The new health centre will enable any adults who need care to be treated locally to their villages, whereas up to now they have to walk over 12km to the nearest free medical clinic and back, when they are unwell!
The new clinic will be purpose built, providing suitably sized rooms for the medical staff to work in and much needed privacy for patients attending them.
The Starfish Song
For many years, we have been using the Starfish Song, which is loved by the children in the UK and Malawi. Please help us to continue making a world of difference through buying this song, and making a donation. Click on the image below to visit Amazon and buy the Starfish Song.
